Auburn Stuns No. 1 Georgia With Walk-Off Field Goal
Unranked Auburn delivered one of the season’s biggest surprises Saturday, knocking off No. 1 Georgia 27-24 on a walk-off 34-yard field goal and adding another chapter to a remarkable two-week stretch at the top of the polls. For the first time since 1990, the nation’s No. 1 team has lost to an unranked opponent in consecutive weeks, a stunning twist for a spot that suddenly looks anything but safe.
Georgia appeared to be in complete control early. The Bulldogs raced to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and looked ready to extend their dominance over unranked competition. Instead, the offense stalled badly after that fast start. Over the next five drives, Georgia failed to score, punting three times, missing a field goal and throwing an interception.
Auburn took full advantage of the opening. The Tigers turned the momentum with 24 unanswered points, flipping the game after the shaky start and putting the top-ranked Bulldogs under real pressure at home. Georgia had entered the game having beaten 53 straight unranked opponents, but that streak became increasingly vulnerable as Auburn settled in on both sides of the ball.
The Bulldogs still had a chance to rescue the game in the fourth quarter. Trailing by 10 at the start of the final period, Georgia cut into the deficit with an early field goal and then forced two Auburn punts. After the second stop, the Bulldogs put together their best drive since the opening quarter, marching 94 yards in 13 plays for a touchdown that tied the score.
When Auburn went three-and-out again on its next possession, all the momentum seemed to belong to Georgia. The Bulldogs got the ball back at their own 39-yard line with more than a minute remaining and appeared positioned to steal the game. A defensive pass interference penalty on the first play gave them an immediate boost and pushed them into a favorable spot.
Then everything changed in an instant. On the very next snap, Georgia quarterback Gunnar Stockton lost a fumble. Auburn recovered at its own 44-yard line with 58 seconds left and all three timeouts still available, turning a likely Georgia game-winning opportunity into a final chance for the Tigers.
Auburn moved quickly. The Tigers gained 22 yards on three straight carries, then picked up a roughing the passer penalty that moved them into easy field-goal range. Alex McPherson came on for a 34-yard attempt and drilled it, sealing the 27-24 upset as time expired.
The result carries broader significance beyond one rivalry game. Georgia’s loss came one week after Texas, then ranked No. 1, fell to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry and later dropped to No. 7. That raises immediate questions about how far the Bulldogs could slide after taking over the top spot only last week with a hard-fought win over Alabama.
This also marked Georgia’s first home loss to an unranked opponent under Kirby Smart since 2019. The Bulldogs are now 5-1 and will have next week off before returning on Halloween to face Florida, which upset Texas in Austin earlier Saturday. Auburn, meanwhile, heads into next week with momentum and will host No. 22 LSU.
With Georgia falling and the No. 1 ranking suddenly unstable, teams such as No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 3 Miami and No. 4 Ohio State now have a clear opening in the race for the top position.
