Steve Sarkisian to Evaluate Everything After Texas Skid
Steve Sarkisian did not hide his frustration after Texas dropped its second straight game, saying every part of the program is now under review following a 30-27 home loss to Florida on Saturday.
The defeat came in damaging fashion for the Longhorns, who entered the weekend trying to recover from last week’s crushing loss to Oklahoma, a result that knocked Texas from the No. 1 spot in the AP poll. Instead of responding, Texas fell again, this time to a Florida team that arrived in Austin on a two-game skid and as an underdog.
Florida’s season had opened with real momentum. The Gators improved to 4-0 after upsetting then-No. 4 Ole Miss in Week 4, but they followed that with two consecutive losses before traveling to face Texas. Even so, they found a way to leave with a statement win, helped by a late sack-fumble of quarterback Arch Manning that effectively sealed the upset.
For Texas, the result only deepened concerns about the direction of the offense and the team as a whole. Sarkisian made clear afterward that no area would be exempt from scrutiny.
“Everything’s going to be evaluated,” Sarkisian said.
He also declined to dismiss the possibility of a quarterback change, though he stopped short of placing the blame solely on Manning.
“Everything means everything,” Sarkisian said. “It would be easy for me to say, ‘Hey, Arch was the problem today.’ Was Arch perfect? No. But nobody was perfect on offense today.”
Manning finished with 173 passing yards and one touchdown pass, but he was under pressure throughout the afternoon. Florida sacked him five times, and Texas managed only 50 offensive snaps, the fewest in Sarkisian’s tenure. The coach said the Longhorns showed promise early, but that level did not last.
“Obviously, I'm extremely disappointed,” Sarkisian said. “We didn't play very good football today, outside about the first quarter. We kind of bled out.”
The loss also added another unwanted note to Texas’ recent history against Florida. The Longhorns were beaten 29-21 by the Gators in October 2025, even though that Florida team later finished 4-8. Saturday’s result extended that frustration and ended a significant home streak as well. Texas had won 22 straight games against unranked opponents at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium before Florida’s victory.
According to ESPN Research, the Longhorns are now just the third team since 1936 to rise to No. 1 in the AP poll and then lose consecutive games to unranked opponents. That statistic underscored how sharply things have turned over the past eight days.
Sarkisian’s comments suggested the evaluation will not stop with players. Because he also handles Texas’ offensive playcalling, his own decisions are part of what must be examined before the Longhorns return to the field.
“We're not playing very good football right now,” he said. “I have to evaluate everything. It's gonna be a long night.”
He later added, “I don't know how many times I need to say it. We're going to evaluate everything from an offensive perspective. Part of that is playcalling.”
Texas will not have much time to regroup. The Longhorns are set to host Ole Miss in Austin next Saturday, and the focus now shifts to whether Sarkisian’s broad review leads to meaningful changes, including at quarterback, after one of the roughest stretches of his tenure.
