2 Killed After Vehicle Enters Wichita Soccer Field
Two people, including a 6-year-old boy, were killed Saturday after a vehicle drove onto a soccer field at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, according to police. Authorities said 11 other people were taken to hospitals after the crash, which unfolded during a busy day of youth sports at the complex.
Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said during a news conference that Sedgwick County emergency dispatchers began receiving multiple calls about the incident at about 3:25 p.m. First responders arrived to find two victims dead on the field and multiple others needing medical attention.
Police identified those killed as a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, both from McPherson, Kansas. Authorities said the two victims were not related.
The driver, a 34-year-old woman, was taken into custody at the scene. Police said investigators believe she had a child playing soccer at the complex that day, though not on the field where the fatal crash happened. Two juveniles were also inside the vehicle at the time of the incident, Moses said.
Officials said the vehicle remained at the scene and that the driver posed no continuing threat to the public. Police also said she had a valid driver’s license, no outstanding warrants and was cooperating with investigators. No charges had been announced as of Saturday, and authorities had not determined whether the crash was intentional or caused by a medical emergency, impairment or another factor.
Injuries and emergency response
Moses said ten victims suffered traumatic injuries that ranged from minor bruises to extremely serious harm, though those injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening. The injured children included two 5-year-olds, two 8-year-olds and a 9-year-old girl. A 61-year-old woman was also taken to a hospital for a nontraumatic medical issue.
Multiple agencies responded to the sports complex, including the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Bel Aire Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services. Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said investigators have established what happened physically but are still working to understand why it occurred.
“We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan also praised bystanders who stepped in before emergency crews arrived, saying community members rushed to help the injured in a way that was “truly amazing.” Wichita Mayor Lily Wu called the incident heartbreaking and said no one could have anticipated the tragedy.
Events halted as investigation continues
The crash also disrupted a major event at the complex. The Kansas State High School Activities Association suspended play at its inaugural girls flag football state championship after the incident, which happened on an adjacent field. The association said games would not resume that weekend and that updated times would be announced later.
Police said the investigation remains active. Detectives have interviewed more than 30 witnesses and are reviewing evidence that includes video and photographs from the scene. Authorities are asking anyone who recorded footage of the incident to submit it to investigators.
Moses summed up the gravity of the event in simple terms: “This is a tragedy.” As investigators continue piecing together the circumstances, officials have not released a motive or final explanation for how the vehicle ended up on the field. For families, players and spectators at the complex, the focus remains on the victims and the many people whose day turned into a scene of chaos and loss.
