Three weeks into the 2026 NFL season, the standings already need context. Five teams remain undefeated, but an unblemished record alone does not guarantee top-10 status. With Week 3 delivering several upsets, the league feels more volatile than dominant, which is exactly why power rankings matter more than raw win-loss totals this early.

The biggest takeaway heading into Week 4 is that quality still outweighs record. Some 3-0 teams have benefited from soft openings, favorable turnover luck, or narrow escapes against flawed opponents. Others look built to last because they have the quarterback play, coaching, and roster balance to survive tougher stretches. That distinction is what separates true contenders from teams merely enjoying a hot September.

At the top, the Bills, 49ers, Broncos, Chiefs, and Seahawks all have convincing arguments. Buffalo continues to win even when Josh Allen is not at his cleanest, which says a lot about its ceiling. San Francisco still looks like the most complete team in the NFC when Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey are rolling. Denver has shown unusual resilience, repeatedly rallying behind a defense that can change games. Kansas City remains dangerous because Patrick Mahomes and a more dynamic run game give the offense multiple answers. Seattle, meanwhile, still looks like a championship-level team despite a sloppy loss that came down to a pair of costly interceptions.

Just below that tier, several teams are close but not flawless. Chicago has stayed dangerous even without full stability at quarterback, which reflects excellent coaching and roster depth. Cincinnati still has one of the league’s most explosive passing attacks, though its defense took a step back in Week 3. Baltimore belongs in the mix because Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry create matchup problems few teams can solve, but the defense still needs to settle in.

The most interesting debate involves the undefeated teams outside the elite group. Minnesota has earned attention with strong coaching and a defense that keeps elevating the entire roster, but questions remain about whether its offense can consistently keep pace against better competition. Las Vegas is 3-0, yet its upcoming schedule could expose how thin the margin really is. That is why one unbeaten team landing outside the top 10, or even near the edge of the top 20, is not disrespect. It is a reflection of what they have and have not proved.

Who is falling fast?

The early disappointments are just as notable. Miami looks headed nowhere at 0-3, especially after losing De'Von Achane for the season. The Chargers have talent but remain stuck in the same cycle of close losses and offensive frustration. New England, Houston, and Tampa Bay all have issues serious enough to raise questions about coaching, quarterback play, or both.

There are also teams in the middle that feel one good month away from relevance. The Saints can score with anyone when they avoid mistakes. The Steelers finally showed offensive life. The Colts and Jaguars have enough structure to rise if they become more consistent on defense and in the red zone.

That is what makes Week 4 so important. September records create headlines, but October starts defining identity. The best teams are not simply the ones stacking wins right now. They are the ones showing traits that travel: quarterback stability, defensive answers, coaching adaptability, and the ability to beat quality opponents. That is why, for now, winning is not everything. Not yet.
